Removing Old Attic Insulation
If your attic has existing fiberglass or cellulose insulation, it’s time to remove it. The old insulation is not doing its job and it’s a mess up there. It may also contain asbestos, vermiculite and other hazardous materials. You should always hire a professional to do this work. They will use a HEPA vacuum to clean up the old insulation and dispose of it safely and responsibly.
The Old Insulation Hinders Air Circulation
When you heat or cool your home, air moves into the attic where it hits the roof and rises. That air should then move down and circulate throughout the rest of your house. If the old attic insulation hinders that circulation, your air will stay hot or cold in certain rooms longer than it should. That causes your HVAC system to overwork and it costs you money.
The Old Insulation Can Promote Mold Growth
The most common attic insulation is either fiberglass batt or blown-in cellulose. These products are prone to rodents and pests that will climb in and create nests. The droppings will contaminate the insulation, creating a health hazard for your family. The contaminated insulation will also encourage mold to grow, and it will contaminate your drywall. The contaminated attic insulation will then be pulled down through the drywall into your living space and recirculated again.
If you want to install spray foam insulation in the attic, the existing cellulose or fiberglass insulation will have to be removed first. Spray foam cannot adhere to the attic floor if it’s covered with traditional insulation. The attic must be completely clear of insulation in order to get an airtight seal.
